Designer of AMAZING ’90s jazz cup pattern found

The intense passion of a nostalgic corner of the Internet flared up last week, with a post on a popular web forum. The anonymous user wanted to find the person behind a design so commonplace you’ve never thought about it. It’s just there. When you ask if you can get some water … when you opt for the combo meal … when you’re given a drink in the hospital.

A continuous broad teal brushstroke, topped with a finer purple one. If that doesn’t ring a bell, imagine it on disposable cups. Over the past couple decades, the pattern has been mass produced on millions of them, in addition to other products. The design is called “Jazz,” and it has an oddly passionate fan base. You can buy it on T-shirts. It’s been spotted on cars. It has a few thousand fans on Facebook.

water faucet spirals

A London student recently designed this conservation-friendly faucet that swirls your water into captivating geometric patterns as soon as you turn on the tap. The faucet weaves small jets of water into intricate, cross-hatched designs that look like they belong on delicate crystal glassware. The faucet head is a simple, minimalistic curve, making the designs it spouts out all the more delightful.

Tiny PMS Match

A personal project of tiny proportion—matching small everyday objects to their Pantone® colors, by designer Inka Mathew. All pictures were taken with her iPhone 5 and edited with Snapseed.

Super cute pictures of Pantone color twins… NOT little matches to start fires when you’re feeling super bloated and irritated and wanna watch something burn. Way sweeter than that.

travel back in time with street view

Go back in time with Street View

If you’ve ever dreamt of being a time traveler like Doc Brown, now’s your chance. Starting today, you can travel to the past to see how a place has changed over the years by exploring Street View imagery in Google Maps for desktop. We’ve gathered historical imagery from past Street View collections dating back to 2007 to create this digital time capsule of the world.

If you see a clock icon in the upper left-hand portion of a Street View image, click on it and move the slider through time and select a thumbnail to see that same place in previous years or seasons.

Now with Street View, you can see a landmark’s growth from the ground up, like the Freedom Tower in New York City or the 2014 World Cup Stadium in Fortaleza, Brazil. This new feature can also serve as a digital timeline of recent history, like the reconstruction after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Onagawa, Japan. You can even experience different seasons and see what it would be like to cruise Italian roadways in both summer and winter…

Hello Kitty’s newest friend is a sad egg

egg1

The latest character to join the Sanrio family, the Japanese lifestyle brand behind Hello Kitty, isn’t a cuddly animal, or even a living creature. It’s an egg named Gudetama.

The company just released a short film (which can be seen below) featuring the little egg. In it, an egg shell is cracked open and out pops Gudetama, a glob-like creature with arms and legs.

Gudetama is pictured fried on rice, as tomago sushi and dripping from a cracked egg. He’s whiny, always has a face of despair, and according to the Sanrio release on the little guy, is “unmotivated.” His attitude is related to the fact that he only exists to be eaten.

And Gudetama is already on Twitter, with pictures of him on a plate of rice with the caption “impossible, oh.”

The character was part of Sanrio’s contest last year to find new characters based on popular Japanese food. Some of the other characters included a tofu geisha and a bread-shaped panda bear.

After a public vote, Gudetama was the runner-up, while Kirimi-chan, a salmon head, won first place and was developed into a line of products.

Slimy salmon and now slimy raw egg? Maybe there’s something to be said for drawing arms and legs on slimy foods we can’t get enough of.
